CNC Lathes by Axis

CNC lathes primarily operate using two main axes: the X and Z axes. The X-axis denotes the radial motion of the tool, moving it inwards and outwards from the center of the workpiece. The Z-axis, on the other hand, controls the longitudinal movement, allowing the tool to travel along the length of the workpiece.

  • 2 Axis Lathes: Uses X (radial) and Z (longitudinal) axes. Simple and efficient for basic turning operations.
  • 3 Axis Lathes: Utilizes X (radial), Z (longitudinal), and Y (off-center) axes. Adds off-center machining capabilities, expanding design and geometric possibilities beyond basic lathes.
  • 4 Axis Lathes:  Combines X, Z, Y, and typically C (rotation around Z) axes. Enables both off-center machining and rotational operations, allowing for more intricate designs and reduced setup times.
  • 5 Axis Lathes:  Incorporates X, Z, Y (off-center), C (rotation around Z), and B (rotation around Y) axes. Enables intricate machining of complex parts without repositioning, saving time and enhancing precision.

Other Types of CNC Lathes Available

Combination Lathes

These lathes combine the functionalities of CNC turning centers and machining centers into one unit. They allow for both turning and milling operations to be performed on the same machine, often without repositioning the workpiece. The benefit of CNC combination lathes is their ability to produce complex parts in a single setup, resulting in time savings, increased efficiency, and enhanced precision.

Flatbed Lathes

These are traditional-style CNC lathes with a flat horizontal bed, upon which the workpiece and tooling move. The flatbed design offers easy access to the workpiece and tooling, making them suitable for larger, longer, and heavier workpieces.

Flatbed lathes are often preferred for simplicity and their robust build, which can handle rougher operations and larger materials with ease. Their straightforward design typically makes them more cost-effective and easier to maintain than slant bed lathes.

Turning Centers

Turning centers are essentially CNC lathes equipped with capabilities that go beyond traditional turning operations. A turning center might have features such as multiple tool turrets, live tooling for milling operations, and sometimes even a secondary spindle (sub-spindle) for performing operations on the backside of a part.

The term "turning center" often signifies a machine that is more advanced than a basic CNC lathe, capable of performing a variety of tasks in a single setup, leading to enhanced efficiency and reduced cycle times.

What Brands We Offer

Our frequently updated inventory offers a wide selection of CNC lathe manufacturers to choose from. Haas machines are typically the most popular choice for manufacturers. We also carry CNC lathes from a dozen leading brands, including:

Choosing the right brand for your used CNC lathe depends on several factors, such as budget, brand reputation, and safety features. That's why it's recommended to go with a reputable brand like Haas or Mazak.
